How corrosion is generated?

The mechanism of the corrosion is, the surface of iron loses electron and ionization by the oxidation reaction and it leaves from the surface of the iron. Generated ion become iron monoxide by oxygen, or iron hydroxide by water and deposits on the surface of iron.
Therefore oxygen and water makes corrosion problem, but this is unavoidable phenomenon for water pipes. Other than water and oxygen, chlorine makes corrosion as well. Chlorine is needed to be dosed into water to stop developing bacteria, therefore corrosion problem happens if we leave our pipe work as it is.
On the other hand, magnetite can not be generated at the normal situation, and only be generated when it is reduced.People used to be suffered by iron because it oxidizes, but after the discovery of magnetite, people use magnetite as useful material. Especially in Japan, people use magnetite for cooking pan, harrow, spade, nail or hinge at the traditional shrine or temple.

Corrosion to Magnetite Mechanism

Iron which is used for water pipe oxidizes by hydrogen and oxygen in water, and become corrosion that makes blockage in pipe work.

4Fs+3O2+2H2O 4FeO(OH)

Corrosion separates off oxygen and hydrogen, and is reduced when it gets electron, then become magnetite which has less than one tenth volume than corrosion. This will make magnetite layer and attached to the inner wall of pipe work, and problem of corrosion blockage is solved.
